The exhibition

Objects that carry goodwill

Bode Well brings together the seven jewellers of Fortunae Jewellery Studio in a collective exhibition exploring objects that carry goodwill and intention. The title draws on an older sense of the phrase, to bode well, signalling that something favourable may unfold.

Small objects have long been made and exchanged to mark connection, offer protection, and carry good wishes between people. Jewellery sits at the centre of this tradition. Worn close to the body, it holds the intention of the maker and the meaning of the relationship from which it came, or that to come.

For this project, each maker began by gifting a small object to a fellow studio member as a gesture of goodwill and a catalyst for making. The works that follow carry that spirit forward, each distinct in voice and the hand, but gathered here as a collective offering.

BODE WELL

Artist statement

Bode Well began with a gifted deck of Minchiate Fiorentine cards from Kim, the sixteenth-century Florentine tarot.  A joyous throwback to time spent trying my hand at engraving, in the city that was built on so much crafts-person-ship, the feeling of discovery and chance at every turn, with heart and hands full.
The decks suit of cups, the coppe, all chalices and urns, led me back to the vessel, a form I first explored in larger scale during earlier studies, returning now to in finer dimensions.
Certain cards became companions at the bench - the Queen who keeps, Two in mutual exchange, Temperance pouring between vessels, and Terra, where feelings ground - and have materialised into literal vessels about how we carry, keep, let go and call back the people and places we love.
A new spring has sprung, and will be trickling in to further new work in the time to come.
